Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr.T.K.Murthy is the senior most Mridangam artist of India. Born on August 13th, 1924, T.K.Murthy learnt the art of Mridangam from his adopted father, Late Thanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer. Shri Murthy has more than 70 years of concert experience and has accompanied almost five generations of Carnatic musicians. Shri Murthy’s Mridangam playing style is very unique and inimitable. It is highly original and striking and beautifully blends into the music of any main performer. He is a highly creative artist who exhibits his flair and innovation spontaneously on stage. His accompaniment for kritis and his filling up of neravals is a speciality in his playing. His tanis are also original and brilliant. Shri Murthy represents the Tanjavur school of Mridangam which was perfected by his guru the Late Thanjavur Vaidyanatha Iyer. Although a staunch follower of the Thanjavur style of Mridangam, T.K.Murthy was highly influenced by the artistry of the legendary Pazhani Subramaniam Pillai of the Pudukottai school. This blend of the Thanjavur and Pudukottai schools has become the hallmark of T.K.Murthy's special style. His style also incorporates highly calculative patterns delivered with a striking clarity and suddenness. He has also trained many students like K.P.Parameswaran, J.Vaidyanathan, B.Shivaraman, B.S.Purushothaman and many more who are highly successful concert performers in their own right. Moreover, he is equally adept in playing other percussion instruments like ghatam, Kanjira and pakawhaj. He is also the master in Konnakkol. (Vocal presentation of Talam). He is the only Mridangist who has released 35 Thalam, 72 Mela Kartha & 108 Thalam CDs.
